Hiking is a non-competitive sporting activity that consists of walking following a specific itinerary. It is usually done on marked trails and approved by the competent body of each country, but also on trails, rural roads and greenways without approval.
An approved trail is a sports facility, identified by a patented marking code, which takes place preferably in the natural environment and on traditional roads, and which has the approval of the competent body as it complies with the requirements of the legislation of each country. Its purpose is to facilitate the hiker’s route with safety and quality.
The hiker uses a particular clothing as well as a set of accessories and devices known as equipment. Although hiking can vary greatly depending on the type of trail, the general clothing and equipment necessary to hike a medium or long distance trail is described.
The 1980s was the time of the spread of the movement to the communities of Madrid and Valencia and the development of the GR, and by the end of the decade there were some 8027 km of marked trails with published topoguides. This decade saw the end of Cullel’s time at the helm of the hiking federation, passing the baton to Domingo Pliego.
